This is a bench that we salvaged from a local transfer station. Rick removed the rotting slats and repainted the cast iron pieces with black, rustoleum spray paint. Then, he ripped down some salvaged pressure treated lumber on his table saw to match the size of the original slats. He drilled some countersink holes in the appropriate places, secured the new slats with some new hardware...and VIOLA!....
....a new bench for Rick & Cyn's family!
The bureau above was salvaged from the inside of an old garage that someone had inherited. Rick happened to be driving by the day the guy was cleaning the place out. I'm going to make my own knobs out of recycled paper mache clay! The wood is in immaculate condition. It would sell for least $150.00.
The antique buffet and mirror above are not an actual set, but go together rather nicely! Rick had the good fortune to get the buffet from a woman at our local bank who was moving and would have taken it to the dump! Such a find goes for $100.00, easily, on ebay.
The mirror was one that had been mounted to the back of a bureau at one time. We found it on the side of the road in someone's moving trash pile. We just removed the brackets and mounted it on the wall. A mirror this size sells for about $100.00
This coffee table had a huge crack in the top, which was originally made out of particle board. The rest of it, however, is real wood. Rick bought a piece of oak veneer plywood and edged it with oak molding, and ta-da!..a beautiful new coffee table for our living room! Similar models online are sold for at least $200.00!
Total cost to Rick and Cyn for above pieces of furniture: $45.00 to redo coffee table.
Total Value of furniture: $550.00
WOW!
It pays to be a trash picker!!
Above is a picture of a small, metal wheelbarrow salvaged from a local transfer station. We were very lucky with this one as the wheel was in great shape, as was the overall integrity of the metal. Rick painted the whole thing black with paint that turns rust into black primer.
